Psychedelic Harm Reduction

Do you know how to support other people having psychedelic experiences, whether positive or challenging? Whether you’ll be around psychedelics in recreational, ceremonial, or clinical settings, our introduction to tripping and trip-sitting is for you.

What’s this Course About?

Do you know how to trip—like an adult? This is a crash course on psychedelic harm reduction, how to prepare for the most meaningful psychedelic experience possible, and how to troubleshoot when things don’t go as planned. Whether you’ll be around psychedelics in recreational, ceremonial, or clinical settings, our introduction to tripping and trip-sitting is for you.

Walk Away with New Skills

  • Distinguish psychedelic harm reduction approaches from medically-oriented, law enforcement focused, and well intentioned but uninformed approaches to dealing with disruptive individuals on psychedelics

  • Understand how “bad trips” are difficult from challenging experiences, learn how to prevent them, and know how to deal with them when they do arise

  • Learn how to prepare for the most meaningful, safe, and healing psychedelic experience possible while accounting for drug-drug interactions and the entourage effect

  • Understand how to be a helpful “trip sitter” and ethically support others having psychedelic experiences

  • Learn about ways to prevent trip sitter burnout and compassion fatigue

  • Learn about strategies for integrating psychedelic experiences and appreciate the importance of integration in making the most out of an entheogenic journey

The Course Includes

The Importance of Psychedelic Harm Reduction

Laying the foundations, we define the term “psychedelic harm reduction” and demonstrate its importance through the story of a trip gone awry. We also define and demystify “bad trips.”

Guidelines for Tripping

Here we review the basic elements of creating a safe, positive trip experience and minimizing the risk of harm. Topics covered include intention, set, and setting; substance choice, purity, dose, and orientation; drug-drug interactions; company; and the infamous “flight instructions.”

Trip Sitting Basics

An introduction to the core principles of supporting another individual during their psychedelic experience. We consider the case of someone having a difficult time on LSD, review trip sitting ethics, and offer suggestions for sitter self care.

Integration & Closing

The basics for making the most out of a psychedelic experience, whether it was challenging, illuminating, blissful, or other. After a quick recap of the preceding modules, we take a look at some other handy resources for further reading and learning.

This course is a fantastic way for practitioners of all experience levels to learn about psychedelic-assisted therapy: Dr. Zelfand reviews its history; provides an overview of various types of psychedelics; reviews the current research and evidence behind their application in the field; as well as discusses possible inclusion/exclusion criteria for treatment. I sincerely hope to have the opportunity to take more advanced courses from her in the future.

In this program, Dr. Zelfand held my attention to each detail of not only the overall message of what the current research is finding, but the nitty-gritty of the research as well through her charismatic, witty, and engaging presenting style. Almost a year after the program, I reflect that Erica’s presentation inspired and enlightened me so deeply that I decided to make an entire career shift towards understanding the future of these medicines.

It was both intellectually exciting to learn the science of psychedelic medicine and emotionally inspiring to hear about its potential for healing. This class was worth attending even though I do not use psychedelic-assisted therapy in my practice. I have many patients asking me about it and I am pleased that I can now offer them science-based information.
"This is one of the best continuing education courses that I have ever taken."
